Time Well Spent: planning summer strategically with university applications in mind - webinar
Mariel Kessel, Director of US University Programmes and Director University Advisor at A-List Education, led a Dukes Club webinar [yesterday] giving advice to students on how best to use the summer break to improve university application prospects.
Focussing on admissions requirements in the UK and US, Mariel advised students to make the most of the two summers before their application to really focus on building experience and skills through activities and programmes that are important to them and related to what they want to do.
Students often question whether universities really care about work experience and extra-curricular activities. Mariel assured us that they do. A student’s commitment to and understanding of what they want to study is very important to universities and students are expected to demonstrate this in their applications.
Mariel advised students to make a list and think carefully about the depth and breadth of their interests – explaining why depth is more important than breadth! Sharing a range of ideas for students to consider from summer work experiences to carrying out family responsibilities, she told students to ‘think about what the university would like to know about you’. It could be as simple as visiting a gallery, or joining a club. And once you have this figured out, make sure you plan a holiday too!
